So yeah, I'm now 18 -- woo-hoo!

And yet, after managing to avoid being sick for a week whilst my roommate was sick, I am now sick, on Saturday, on my birthday, on the weekend when I need to get HW done, yeah...

Thanks, thanks a lot.

P.S. new fractals. ;)

Edit: So I went and bought a giant pack of water and a giant pack of cold medicine, so hopefully that will do the trick. By the way, who is my resident subscription philanthropist? I thank you for your generosity, I was planning on purchasing one myself, but I think I can spend some money on my photo account and don't have to worry about this one. Thanks again, I appreciate it! :)

I'm the same way, but unfortunately I find time to be on here anyway. I have finals next week, but I have summer classes two weeks after that, so I no longer have that lovely three month summer vacation. :(

I'm fairly good, just turned 18 and am fighting with a cold, but otherwise I'm doing okay.

How are you, I haven't stopped by your page in a long time, so I don't know what you are up to.

Ah. Well normally when I render apophysis only sucks up 1.5GB of ram at most. Luckily I got a lot to spare xD on both laptop and desktop. Even though it sucks up ram though it doesn't quite slow me down :P

I know what you mean, most of my renders are done on my single core desktop, just because I can use my laptop while something is rendering. Of course, since I only go home from college every two weeks or so, I have had to render things on my laptop, and I love being able to multitask at the same time.

Lol yeah, my desktop is core 2 duo but my laptop is single core :X so I don't even try rendering on my laptop unless I need to XD

Yeah. I have a pretty good processor lol. Just wishing for a quadcore though :) then it'd take under an hour maybe xD

And all these computer parts just for fractal rendering T_T

An hour and a half is not bad, actually...it takes me longer than that with lower settings. ;)

Yeah it was saved as a .png. The thing about setting my quality to 4000 is it takes a really long time to render a big picture ^^; for 2300x2300 with the quality at 4000 took like an hour and a half (Maybe less because I paused it a few times to play a game)

Besides a quality of 200, the rest of the settings were fine. That recent piece should have a slightly higher FR and you should save it as a .png if you haven't done so already.

Oh. Yeah for a while I was rendering 5000x5000 fractals but they turned out like crap and they were so fuzzy. My quality was like 200, OS 2, FR 0.5. I changed my quality to 4000 and Drago ([link]) seemed to turn out a lot cleaner. I guess I'll try fooling around with the FR though. Never touched it because I didn't know what it was :P

Thanks for your help!

It really does come down to the type of flame, how it renders, and how much post processing goes into it.

For render settings, I usually go with a render size that is at least 2x the desired size, if I can. Quality is set at 4000, with an oversample of 2. When it comes to filter radius, that's an interesting setting. The higher that setting is, the more "blurry" a fractal will be, but a low setting will reveal jagged edges, etc. What you have to find is the balance between sharp and blurry and that depends on the flame. If I do a preview of 100 quality, it will show what spots might turn out as. If I see jagged edges, I set the FR to around 0.6 or 0.8, otherwise I usually go with 0.2

As I mentioned earlier, post processing is also a crucial part of getting fractals to look smooth. Usually "levels" is the best way to get rid of grain, but I do the brightness/contrast, saturation, sharpening stuff as well.

Just remember, the key to clean renders is what size you render it at. The higher you can go, the better. Quality isn't a factor, OS isn't much of a factor (essentially the same things as rendering 2x or 3x), and FR does a little. Pretty much all smooth pieces of art were created on a huge canvas, then shrunk down to the resulting size.

Hi

Great work. I just have one quick question: How do you get your fractals to come out so not.. grainy? :o

I mean I end up just going over it in photoshop or something but it doesn't look like you really had to do that (or I guess you're just that good) xD

Well, happy early birthday then. Honestly I would think about ditching Friday, pending no tests or anything. Of course, that's kind of hard to do in high school. ;)

I was saying I probably won't go on MSN until the 21st, if that.
